Review & Photos by Mike Phelps Mike Phelps

In 1968 Plymouth decided that muscle cars had gotten to far from their original purpose.  Thus the Road Runnerâ„¢ was born.  It was based on a stripped Belvedereâ„¢ the standard engine 383cdi up to race ready 440 Magnumâ„¢. Plymouth® paid 50,000 dollars to Warner brothers to a fix the cartoon bird on to its new vehicle. The Road Runnerâ„¢ is perhaps the second most significant muscle car to the 64′ Pontiac® GTOâ„¢.  In 1970 the 6 pack hood was dropped and the  air grabber hood was put into its place.

1614 This kit contains 76 pieces which includes 3 trees molded in white,2 trees molded in chrome, 1 tree in clear  parts and soft black tires. It also contains a 23 piece decal sheet that will allow you to stripe it if wanted. This kit gives you the option of both the stock sport rims and the cop rims. Not to be misleading but the body and the hood are molded in white and needed to be painted. Sorry for any confusion.

1616 The body was primed with Color Place® gray primer and painted in Plastikote® Chevy engine orange.

1617 The engine was painted in Testors© Chrysler® engine red.  The 440 in this kit is equipped with a 6 pack carburetion system. The 440 was good for 390 hp and 490 ft/lbs. of torque.

1619 There are no decals in this kit for the hood stripes.  You will need to use painter’s tape to line out the stripes.

DSCN1621
1621 This is what the stripes should look like after being painted on. They were flat black.

DSCN1626
1626 The frame and chassis also need to be painted need to be the same color as the car.

1629 This is what it should look like after the rear suspension and exhaust pipes are put on.

DSCN1633
1633 As shown here do not forget to paint the A-arms.

1634 This is the sport rim that is stock and this is how it should look like after being painted. It should be painted flat black to give it an original look. If you use the cop rims  there are  two ways  that it could be painted authentically which consists of the following :  1) it could be painted the same color of the car 2) from the inner part of the rim to the center cap it could be painted silver to dull the chrome. If you choose to paint the rims the car color place them in liquid plumber this will dissolve the chrome and not hurt the plastic. After the chrome is gone wash thoroughly and let dry.

1637 In this picture of the dog house the bottles are to be painted flat white. The radiator and battery are painted flat black. Now if you are wondering about the purple circle on the radiator support, it was a sprue that I painted to simulate the horn.  If you decide to add a horn, on all Road Runner’sâ„¢ they were purple.

1638 The dashboard and door panel are shown here. They were painted in flat black and then in satin black. After detailing, this is what they should look like. This matches the interior of the real car.

DSCN1642
1642 The interior’s bottom should be painted the same as the chassis in the car. The bottom part of the interior should be taped off so that you can paint the top part satin black.

1648 The clear parts were put in with Testors© Window and Clear Parts™ glue.  The window trim was done with a toothpick and brush. The grill was painted flat black and the excess paint was removed with a toothpick.
