Review and Photos by Mike PhelpsÂ
One of the rarest muscle cars ever built was the 1970 Plymouth Superbird. This car along with the Dodge Charger Daytona was designed for NASCAR. This car was based on the Road Runner. The design of the Superbird body style followed suit of the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. The Chrysler Corp. wanted to make the two cars as aerodynamic as possible. This is what gave them their most extreme and unique look. The cone shaped nose was to allow the cars to cut through the wind. The scoops on the fenders were to allow air to escape and not get trapped in the fender wells. The scoops allowing that to happen would help keep the car from flipping. They also wanted to add a rear spoiler to the cars. Now if you are wondering about the height of the wing. Well it had to be a production car before it could be a race car. So they had to make it high enough so that the public who bought them could use and open the trunk to its full extent. The Superbird was also made famous by the “King” Richard Petty and his NASCAR wins. By 1971 the Plymouth Superbird as well as the Dodge Charger Daytona was pretty much banned by NASCAR. Today both cars are some of the most sought after cars by collectors and museums.
1746. This kit contains 65 pieces, 3 trees molded in white, 1 tree in chrome, 1 tree in clear parts and the body is bagged separately. It also includes a 29 piece decal sheet for stock and racing, instruction sheet and soft black tires.
1752. The body was painted in Krylon gray primer.
1753 The body was painted in Krylon True Blue gloss.
1754 The vinyl roof was painted in Testors flat black 1149.
1759 The chassis should be painted the same color as the body.
1775 The Superbird decals do not come with the kit. So I did them the best I could to make them look authentic. I used Testors flat white acrylic 921574, Testors purple gloss acrylic 921504031, Testors 1114 yellow and Testors 1163 flat blue. There are 3 places on the car they should be placed and they are the outer sides of the wing stands and the drivers side of the nose cone. I did them with a sewing needle and a paint brush.
1790 The engine was painted with Testors 2732 Chrysler engine red the. The transmission was painted in Testors 1146 silver and the exhaust headers in Testors 1180 steel.
1776 Don’t forget to paint the upper “A” arms on the chassis flat black.
1778 The underside of the chassis with the exhaust and suspension. The front and rear suspension were painted in Krylon satin black. The exhaust pipes were painted in Testors 1180 steel, the mufflers in Testors 1146 silver and the exhaust tips in Testors 2734 silver chrome.
1804 This picture shows the mighty 440-6 pack. There were only 665- 440- 6 pack engines produced in the 1970 Superbird. The 440-6 pack was capable of 375 bhp at 4600rpm and 480lbs. of foot torque at 3200rpm. It was clocked at 0-60 in 5.9 seconds and it could run a 1/4 mile in 14.2 seconds at 103.7mph.
1797 The console and the door panels. The wood grain was painted in Testors 1166 flat brown and the door panel trim was painted in Testors 2734 silver chrome.
1797a The dash board was done in Testors 2734 silver chrome. Remember to put the red button on the left side. The button was done in Testors 1103 red along with the small gauge needles. The two main gauges they furnish decals for. They are numbers 16 and 17 on the decal sheet.
1802 This is how the wheel rims need to look to match the rims on the real car.
1803 In this picture it shows the completed interior.
1805 The completed dog house with the air filter housing.
1806 Here it shows the Road Runner logo on the left side of the nose cone. By putting the Road Runner logos in their correct places will complete the car and make them automically correct.
