Review and Photos by Tony and Martha Gibson
In the 70’s Bobby Allison was one of NASCAR’s most famous drivers. The Coca-Cola cars were very popular. This 1967 Chevelle was one Allison drove on the short tracks before the shorter wheelbase 68-69 Chevelle and 70 Camaro came onto the scene. This kit actually started out as a glue bomb from a box I bought at a swap meet and I was building it for fun. I just got carried away.
For the Modeler: With a little imagination, and enough guts to make Bobby Allison proud – you too could raid the parts from some other perfectly good kits take some aftermarket decals and turn something good into something very special.  Even thought it’s far from stock, this car was built using only Monogram parts from 3 different kits and an after market decal sheet. You can get those online from places like Mike’s Decals or just search for a source,
This model was built using a Revell ‘67 Chevelle kit #85-4285 that has been re-released as the Street Burner Series Chevelle. The chassis was built using a Monogram Regal NASCAR kit and the driver was taken from the Revell Kurtis Kraft Indy Car kit.
Fig 002) – The body was cut and shaved to look like a race car using a Dremel tool, X-acto blade and different levels of sand paper. The wheel openings were cut out, door handles shaved along with the moldings, and the head lights were removed. Aluminum and screen replaced the openings.
 Â
Fig 003) – The chassis was the inner interior tub only with a cage from a NASCAR kit. It was shortened at the base to fit the inner greenhouse of the roof. The front suspension was the front section of the NASCAR kits suspension and front roll bars. It was attached to the interior tub at the base. Evergreen plastic, rectangle stock, was used for the frame and rear frame structure. The rear end was also from the NASCAR kit along with springs and shocks. The engine was from the Chevelle kit. Some minor changes to the oil pan were made for fit.
 Â
Fig 004) – The driver was modified to fit the NASCAR seat by taking some of the material out of the lower back and butt area and simply dropping it into place. Decals were from Power Slide, they really make a nice assortment of racing decals. You can get Power Slide decals from a number of online sources such as Mike’s Decals or do a web search to turn up a number of sources.
This is just one example of what you, the modeler, can build with a little imagination and some research on old cars. It also shows how you can use more than one kit to get the desired effect. Building something like this takes a lot of time and experience, but there are a lot more options than just building kits from the box!
Keep the glue off the windshield!
