RoR Review 20100903 – Corporal Missile with Transporter
Model & Review by Dan Tomaszewski
Background:
The U.S. Army surface to surface Corporal Missile was capable of launching a conventional or Atomic missile at ranges over 75 miles with great accuracy enabling a distant attack. The missile is carried by a large specially designed transporter, which travels to the launching site and erects the missile on to a launching platform.
This review looks at the Revell 85-7852 Corporal Missile with Transporter and Launcher in 1:40 scale. This kit is from a 1983 mold and was built out-of-the-box (OOB) without any modifications.Â
Review:
As with any kit, wash the parts and let them air dry completely to remove any molding resins or other films that could disrupt paint or adhesives. Most of the model went together well except for the missile itself.  It required sanding off the pin locators so the halves would line up better. Next fill the seam where the two halves met as there was a pretty good gap because of a void in the molded part. Fill the void with some modeling putty and then sand the area. Once that’s finished apply a coat of flat white paint.Â
Assembly of the launcher presented some challenges, as well, getting the platforms to fit onto the flash shield correctly. After some investigation it became apparent that the platforms were molded a little short. To correct this just add some extra glue to take up the space and after painting, it is hardly noticeable.
When it comes to the cab assembly, cut out the plastic for the windows of the cab using the template that came with the instructions but since it would be difficult to cover the windows during the painting process, don’t install them until later. Paint the cab and the remaining parts needed to enclose it (doors, roof etc.) then install the windows.
Assembly of the chassis and elevating boom as well as painting followed without a hitch. After waiting for all the painted surfaces to dry thoroughly, but before final assembly, apply the decals per the instructions.Â
Finally, join all the modules, missile, elevating boom and chassis together to finish the model.
Kit Includes:
Transporter cab doors open & close, operating pistons on leg braces, real gears elevate rotary boom, leg pads hinge & swivel, 4 movable support arms & braces.
Also included are six figures (not shown), radar scanner and launcher platform with optional traveling or launch position assemblies and authentic U.S. Army missile and vehicle markings.
The final assembly with all the additional support equipment and figures will make an impressive military diorama all of its own.
Pros:
Impressive detail, military markings and general fit with a couple exceptions.
Cons:
With almost 200 pieces and working gears this kit might be considered a level three kit for more experienced modelers.
