Built in 1967, the U.S.S. King was a guided missile destroyer of the Farragut class. It originally served as part of a peacekeeping force to check Communist aggression in the Southeast Asian seas. The later versions serving in Vietnam as the war increased in intensity, the U.S.S King also functioned as a rescue ship for downed pilots. It was a very fast ship with the most sophisticated fire control systems of that time. The ship was manly designed to destroy air targets and was equipped with one twin launcher firing Terrier missiles from the aft deck. It could also carry surface to air, surface to surface, and anti-submarine warfare missiles.  Unfortunately the U.S.S. King was sold for scrap in 1994.

For the Modeler: This review covers the USS King Guided Missile Destroyer 1:500 Scale Revell Model Kit #85-0603. It is a re-issue of the original Renwal kit in the Blueprint Models Series.  Revell rates this as a Skill Level 2 kit for intermediate builders.  The kit c000bomes in 78 parts molded in Grey plastic on three sprues.  This kit features display stand, missile system, and ship’s boats. Overall dimensions are: Length: 12″, Width: 1.3″.

It’s hard to image that the Chevrolet Corvette can get better with every new generation but this seventh rendition of the venerable roadster is assuredly the best yet. Stunning good looks coupled with unabashed power continue to push the envelope in the luxury sports car segment.

For the Modeler:  This review covers the skill level 3 (10 years and older) 2014 Corvette Stingray 1:25 Scale Revell Model Kit #85-4350.  The reason this is a skill level 3 kit is because it requires glue and optional paint for assembly in the pre-decorated 000b series.  This kit appears to be drawn from a SnapTite model.  Although glue is required the positive placement points with posts and slots make assembly painless.  There is some paint recommended for this model to finish off details like exhaust, engine/tranny, etc.  And there’s a three hour assembly rating on the package but if you spend an extra hour – you can simply add some great detail to this kit! The kit is precisely molded in red, black, and chrome plated parts with clear pre-installed windows, vinyl tires and transparent red taillights.  There’s really no flash and the pre-finished exterior is excellent.  It assembles easily following the instructions. Finished dimensions are: Length: 6-15/16″, Width: 3-5/16″, Height: 1-7/8″.

This is the perfect transition kit when trying to move a novice builder into glue kits.  With only 56 beautifully finished pieces – this kit will really be a source of pride for the novice builder. It can show someone the process of following directions and calls for some minor paint details to be added too.

Overall: The part fit on this kit is excellent. Although it’s a simple kit, it has some nice detail and room for optional work by the advanced builder.  This is a great first kit for the novice builder moving into the realm of glue kits.  You won’t find a car kit that has this intent more clearly engineered than this one.  For accomplishing its mission in that regard, I rate this one a knockout!

The Honda CB77, or Super Hawk, was a 305 cc straight-twin motorcycle produced from 1961 until 1967. It is remembered today as Honda’s first sport bike. It is a landmark model in Honda’s advances in Western motorcycle markets of the 1960s, for its speed and power as well as its reliability, and is regarded as one of the bikes that set the standard for modern motorcycles. The CB77 had, at only 305cc, a relatively big engine in comparison to most other Japanese bikes of the period, although it had performance to rival much larger motorcycles from other countries. It quickly built a reputation for reliability, and was equipped with luxuries such as an electric starter. The CB77 was built on the experience Honda had gained in Grand Prix racing, and differed greatly from previous models. It had a steel-tube frame instead of the pressed frames of earlier Hondas, and a telescopic front fork. The parallel twin engine, the biggest then available in a Honda, was an integral element of the bike’s structure, providing stiffness in a frame that had no downtube, and was capable of 9,000 rpm. It could propel the bike at over 100 mph; as fast as British parallel twins with higher displacements, and with great reliability. Cycle World tested its average two-way top speed at 104.6 mph, and its 1⁄4 mile time in 16.8 seconds at 83 mph.

For the Modeler: This review covers the Revell ORIGINAL 1966 release of the Honda Super Hawk motorcycle in 1/8 scale. Although this kit has been discontinued you can still find them for sale at online auction sites. A similar kit was issued as well.  The kit 1 has over 125 parts molded in Red, Chrome, Clear and Clear Red with Rubber tires and Tubes for running lines and cables. The motor and exhaust are multiple parts and all chrome. The frame and front forks are multiple parts and build around the motor. There is not much detail to this kit being it is so old and not on par with the newer releases. But this is a nice kit to build. The only decals are the speedometer and tank logo. As this was an older opened kit I had no instructions. I found instructions for a similar kit online.  Those are typical of the issues you can run into with a vintage kit but thanks to the internet and some great hobby products, like Alclad II Lacquer, that’s no longer a show stopper. Overall finished dimensions are: Length: 10”, Width: 3”, Height: 2-1/4”.

NOTE:  Being a Vintage kit this one has a few issues. The Chrome has faded and needs re-chroming. There are multiple options available from Electroplating and Spray Chemical coating where you send the parts away. Or, there are products on the market from Alclad II that will reproduce a realistic Chrome surface on the parts. This review will feature the use of Alclad II Chrome Lacquer.
