According to Revell, “The Speedwagon was the collaboration between Artist/Designer Thom Taylor and craftsman/builder Dan Fink. It is a unique street rod, designed to showcase the wide variety of parts available from Ford’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) Catalogue Division. It started as a sketch on a piece of paper that then blossomed into a full size machine. While some parts were off the shelf, much of the Speed wagon was custom made by the team at D.F. Metalworks. The construction of the Speedwagon started with a set of reproduction frame rails, an original 3-window cowl section, steel fender and reproduction rubber running boards. The balance of the car was basically scratch built by Dan Fink’s experienced crew. But, like the most modern street rods, the Speedwagon has all the creature comforts such as power brakes, air conditioning, hidden wipers and tilt steering wheel”.

For the Modeler: This review covers the Dan Fink Speedwagon Re-release (Re-Pop) from Revell. It is 1/25 scale and kit #4373 in the current catalog. Revell rates this as a Skill Level 3 for advanced builders and they are on par due to the suspension assembly and 1 body painting. The kit comes in 111 parts molded in White, Chrome, Clear and Red Clear and comes with Vinyl tires. Assembly is straight forward with sub-assemblies and final assembly sequences. The motor is nicely detailed and with some basic wiring; looks really good. The chassis and suspension are a Hot Rod set-up and construction of the front suspension is a little touchy. The interior is overly basic. The body is a multiple part unit that requires painting in steps with different colors. It can be difficult to paint the body correctly if you are a beginner. The decals have the wood siding on them and look pretty good also. The instructions are typical of Revell’s easy-to-follow book style. Overall dimensions are: Length: 5-5/16″, Width: 2-3/4″, Height: 2-3/8″.

The first hot rods were old cars (most often Fords, typically Model Ts, 1928–31 Model As, or 1932-34 Model Bs), modified to reduce weight. Typical modifications were removal of convertible tops, hoods, bumpers, windshields, and/or fenders; channeling the body; and modifying the engine by tuning and/or replacing with a more powerful type. “Speedster” was a common name for these modified cars. Wheels and tires were changed for improved traction and handling. “Hot rod” was sometimes a term used in the 1950s as a derogatory term for any car that did not fit into the mainstream. Hotrodders’ modifications were considered to improve the appearance as well, leading to the show cars of the sixties, replicating these same modifications along with a distinctive paint job. In addition, rodders in the fifties routinely bored out the Flatties by 0.1875 in (4.76 mm) (to 3.375 in (85.7 mm)) for more power.  But due to the tendency of blocks to crack as a result of overheating, that practice fell out of favor. In the ’50s and ’60s, the flatty was supplanted by the early hemi. Engine swaps often involved fitting the Ford flathead engine, or “flatty”, for a modern V8 (like the 255 cid  V8).  By the 1970s, the small-block Chevy was the most common option, and since the ’80s, the 350 cu in (5.7 l) Chevy has been almost ubiquitous.

For the Modeler: This review covers the Revell Special Edition ‘29 Model A Roadster 2 ‘n 1 kit #85-4322 in 1/25th scale. It is rated at a Skill Level 3 build for the advanced modeler and is worthy of any collection. The kit consists of 149 parts molded mainly in white which gives the modeler a choice of many different variations that can be built with the extra parts available.  There are a lot of chromed parts and the plating is nicely done. The decals are excellent and you’re given many options by following the box art, the instructions or just however you might want to build it. This kit features a choice of frame type, intake style, steering wheel, and headlights. The finished model has a Length of 5-9/16″, Width: 2-¾” and Height: 2-1/8″.

1970 Chevelle SS DONK 1:24 Scale Revell Model Kit #85-2058 Review

Review and Photos by Alan Mann Alan Mann (Thumbnail)

The Chevelle is a mid-sized Muscle Car produced by Chevrolet in three generations for the 1964 through 1977 model years. Part of the General Motors A-Body platform, the Chevelle was one of Chevrolet’s most successful nameplates. Body styles include coupes, sedans, convertibles and station wagons. After a three-year absence, the El Camino was reintroduced as part of the new Chevelle lineup. The 1970 Chevelle shared many sheet metal body parts with the 1970 Buick Skylark GSX, both are GM automobiles and have interchangeable sheet metal. They’re also the only 2 high performance muscle cars to share the same roofline. The 1970 Chevelle came in sport coupe, sport sedan, convertible, four-door sedan, a couple of wagons, and coupé utility (the El Camino) body styles.

Donks are a type of highly customized automobile, typically a traditional, full-size, body on frame, V8 powered, rear wheel drive American-built sedan modified by significantly increasing the ground clearance and adding large-diameter wheels with low-profile tires. Vehicles customized in the Donk style are distinguished by their oversized (even disproportionate) wheels, ranging from 20 inches to 30 inches or more in diameter (largest being 50 inch), as well as fanciful custom paint-jobs and expensive audio equipment. Suspension modifications similar to those employed on lifted pickup trucks are made to give adequate clearance for the large wheels. They were given this name because the “Impala” symbol was referred to as a “donkey” by owners or “donk” for short.

For the Modeler: This review covers the Revell Release of the Donk version of the3 ‘n 1 ’70 Chevelle Kit # 85-2058 in the catalog and is a Re-release (Re-Pop) with new parts. This is considered a Conversion kit. The model has seen multiple releases and there are 1 parts are in this kit to replicate the Stock, Supercharged “Heavy Chevy”, and Donk versions. But the decals only have the custom Donk version. This is a Skill Level 2 kit for moderate ability builders. The kit has about 130 parts molded in White, Clear, Chrome and includes Vinyl tires and metal pins. The build is straight forward and fairly easy with few problems. It has a nicely detailed motor with an optional supercharger. The motor can be wired and made into a contest quality look quite easily. The chassis is fairly detailed and includes a complete Chrome Donk suspension as well as a stock suspension. The interior is a tub and while the detail is good, painting it is an issue as the door panels are attached. The body is straight and smooth with few blemishes. As it is a one-piece body with just the hood separate; painting is easy. The tires are the typical no name generic style. The instructions are the usual book style you see from Revell. The decals are Donk version only but include seat and dash decals. As a DONK build version the overall dimensions are: Length: 8-3/8″, Width: 3-1/4″, Height: 3”.
