Designed to take passengers from the train to their destination, the station wagon quickly evolved into the family transport of choice for millions of Americans. The ’57 Ford offered both 4-door and 2-door wagons. They featured Ford’s new bow-shaped frame, along with a revised suspension for an improved ride. The impetus for the creation of the Del Rio was Ford’s desire to remain in the two-door sport wagon market started by the Chevrolet Nomad and Pontiac Safari and the decision to discontinue the company’s original attempt at a sport wagon, the premium Parklane, which failed to entice buyers during 1956, its only year in production. While the Nomad was Chevrolet’s most expensive model, offering a premium vehicle with a show car-inspired body style, the Del Rio was strictly based on an existing product, the utilitarian two-door Ranch Wagon, Ford’s least expensive station wagon, as part of the Custom 300 series.

For the modeler: This review covers the Revell release, under the Monogram name, of the Del Rio Ranch Wagon as a 2n1 kit in 1/25 scale. This is kit #4193 in the current catalog and is an All New Mold. Rated as a Skill Level 3 this kit is for advanced builders. The 000b kit comes in 156 parts molded in White, Chrome, Clear, and Clear Red and includes Vinyl tires. You get the option of two Rio wagon version builds: Police package with roof light, screen, and radio; or a factory standard vehicle. Both styles use a detailed 312c.i. Thunderbird V-8 that can be even more detailed with aftermarket accessories. The kit has a separate frame to make the chassis detailing much easier and even more authentic. The interior is crisply molded and can be done as a stock or the included police items version. The body is straight and has great moldings and crisp detail. The decals are well detailed and include police and stock options. The instructions are typical of Revell’s newer style books with highly detailed layouts. Overall dimensions are: Length: 8″, Width: 3″, Height: 2-3/8″.

Experience in Vietnam demonstrated the need for a better visual and blind bombing capability. In March 1968, the Air Force ordered development of an upgraded bombing/navigation system, incorporating a Singer-General Precision inertial navigation system, improvements to the AN/APN-131 navigation radar, and solid-state circuitry for the R-14A radar, which was re-designated R-14K. Furthermore, the digital AN/ARN-92 long-range navigation receiver replaced the problematic AN/ARN-85 receiver. The additional avionics were housed in a long, raised dorsal spine. The modified bombing/navigation system was known as Thunderstick II. F-105s with this system could achieve a bombing circular error of probability (CEP) of 50 feet (15 m) from an altitude of 15,000 ft (4,600 m). Although the first Thunderstick II aircraft flew in 1969, they were not used in Vietnam. A total of 30 F-105Ds received this modification.

For the Modeler: This review covers the F-105 D Thunderstick II 1:48 Scale Revell Model Kit #85-5866. It is a skill level 2 plastic kit molded in light gray with a clear canopy containing 87 parts. This kit also features a detailed cockpit with a pilot figure. This kit has been released previously in other versions. Upon opening the box one finds that the parts are molded in light grey, transparent clear, and decals for two different Aircraft: 1.) AFRes 457th Tactical Fighter Squadron stationed at Carswell AFB, Texas 1976 and 2.) USAF 563rd Tactical Fighter Squadron stationed at McConnel AFB, Kansas. Completed dimensions are; Length 16-7/8“ Wingspan 8¾”.

HUMVEE 1:25 Scale Revell SnapTite Model Kit #85-1970 Review

The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), “Humvee” was developed for the Army in 1979 and has been in production since 1985. The Humvee was created to replace several older vehicles in the Army. In 1992 a civilian Humvee version was released due to its popularity amongst the civilians and off roaders. The Humvee has heavy duty springs, a 8 cylinder diesel engine, four wheel fully independent suspension, a four speed transmission and a central tire inflation system. The Humvee was designed with a low center of gravity, a 72 inch track width, and a 16 inch ground clearance. With the snorkel kit the Humvee can ford up to 60 inches of water. The top speed for the Humvee is 65 mph. the United States Army has several variations of the Humvee depending on what mission or job it is needed for.

For the modeler: This is the Revell kit 1970 that is 1: 25 scale, and a Skill Level 1. Revell released this kit before (dates unknown) and now Revell brings it back in 2012. I have found five other versions of the 1:25 Humvee the last three of which are a 000b civilian version; Revell 1909 Wheels of Fire Military Humvee, Revell 1939 Easy Kit Humvee, Revell 7110 Easy Kit Hummer, Revell 1907 SnapTite Hummer, and Revell 1938 Hummer H1.The pieces are molded in desert tan, clear, black vinyl tires with sticker decals. There are 35 pieces to this kit and very well laid out instructions. This 8 page, full color Step-by-Step review examines the basic construction of this kit. It will also explore a few ways to do simple camouflage that can be done both on military vehicles and civilian vehicles. Unless stated differently Testors Model Cement in the tube and Testors Enamel paint in the bottle was used for the construction of this model kit. Finished dimensions are; 7½” L X 3½” W X 4½” H.

Covered in this Review: If you want to perfect your build; basic construction; preparing parts for better finishing; alternate assembly sequence suggestions for fit and ease of finishing; dashboard and interior detailing; complete paint and adhesive selections and applications; test fitting; wheel and tire construction and installation; techniques for completing both desert and woodland camouflage exteriors; version considerations; highlighting springs for realism; missile launcher assembly and finishing; turn signal and brake light detailing; correcting the kit supplied camouflage scheme and markings; making camouflage with Silly Putty; identifying and removing unwanted script; paint mismatches for authentic filed colors; removing unwanted labels; windshield construction and appropriate adhesive; decal application and finishing; are all fully examined in this 14 page, full-color Step-by-Step review in PDF format.
