Jinx Express by Tom Daniel 1:24 Scale Monogram Model Kit #85-6899 Review

The Jinx Express is a rollin’ “Fort Knox” from the mind of Tom Daniel and the model makers at Monogram. It has all those “go” details you’ve come to expect from Tom: Zoomie pipes, tinted hood scoop and a big bad engine, periscope, high-rise spoiler and big, wide, super-fast slicks to give it the GO when the green light comes on. This model has a detailed driver’s compartment, revolving turret with a coin slot for deposits, and rear “vault” door that opens with a combination lock that really works! This truck is really a bank. Drop the coins in the top slot and open the combination door at the rear to make a withdrawal.

From the Tom Daniel notes: “Jinx was a spoof name and rhymes with the name of a well-known armored Truck company that hauls money around and who got robbed of BIG bucks. I thought it only fitting to ‘hot rod’ a money truck. This was the first version (Fast Buck was the second). I had a lot of fun designing this one with all the rivets (I am a rivet freak), and all the gun ports, revolving top turret, BIG rear spoiler, wheelie wheels and all the rest. Early on, it was decided to actually make this model kit capable of being used as a “Piggy Bank”…the slot to drop in coins is in the top turret… so I deliberately gave the front end treatment a kind of pig snout look to it. The short wheel base and overall “chunky” look always appealed to me.”

For the modeler: This review covers the Monogram Re-release (Re-Pop) of the Jinx Express and is 1/24 Scale. Revell list this as kit #6899 in the current catalog. This is the first direct Re-release of this kit in the “Jinx Express” form since 1971 but it was 1 also released as the “Fast Buck” many years ago. This is rated as a Skill Level 2 for the intermediate builder. There are 81 parts molded in Grayish Silver, Chrome, Clear Green and it has Vinyl tires. The decals are on a small sheet with a logo and peace signs. The instructions are the newer Revell book style. You get a fairly detailed motor, unfortunately it is hidden in the build. The chassis is a basic plate as it is a bank. The body is a solid part with the rear “Vault” door opening. There is an interior but it is not seen in the final build too well so detail is really unnecessary. The final build is solid and can be actually used as a bank without falling apart. Overall dimensions are: Length: 6-5/8″, Width: 3-1/8″, Height: 3-5/8″.

In the late 60s and early 70s some of the most exciting cars you could see at the drag strip were the Fuel Injected Funny Cars. While the outer body was different the chassis’ were all very similar. The tubular frame was simplistic and held a monster of a motor, the 427 was a Ford favorite. These cars put out tons of horsepower sending the Funny Car to a blazing 250 MPH, 7 second Quarter Mile! All the cars ran a Fiberglass body designed after a Stock style street car. The muscle cars of the day were some of the most popular styles with many of the drivers. In my research I did find a multitude of the GT Fastback Ford Mustang Funny Cars. While this particular graphic design is generic it is representative of what you would find at the local drag strip every weekend.

For the modeler: This review covers the Round2 Re-Release (Re-Pop) of the AMT ’65 Mustang GT Funny Car. This is Kit #AMT888 in their catalog and is a Retro Deluxe Edition run of the kit. This kit can be found for sale in hobby shops and online. This kit has seen multiple Box Arts over the years and has been around well for many years. It seems the molds have been cleaned up and repaired as there is little Flash on this kit compared to previous versions, and the moldings are very crisp too. This is a Skill Level 2 for the Moderate Builder although no ratings are given on the box. The build consists of 90 parts molded in White, Chrome, Clear and Clear Blue and has Vinyl tires. There is a new high quality sheet of decals. You get a nicely detailed motor with the ability to add extra details. The tubular frame is simplistic. It has a tub style interior. The body is a single cast with minor mold lines. Front and rear stone pans and has a modified wheel base. The rear tires are Slicks and are factory printed. Overall dimensions are: Length: 7”, Width: 3”, Height: 2”.

The Judge 1969 GTO Funny Car 1:25 Scale Model King Kit #21891P Review

Review and Photos by Alan Mann  Alan Mann (Thumbnail)

The GTO was built by the Pontiac division of GM from 1964 to 1974. Although there were earlier muscle cars the GTO is considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models. In 1969 a new model called the “Judge” was introduced. The name came from a comedy routine, “Here Come de Judge”, used repeatedly on the Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In TV show. The Judge routine was made popular by legendary showman Sammy Davis, Jr. In the late 60s and early 70s some of the most exciting cars you could see at the drag strip were the Nitro-Methane powered Funny Cars. While the outer body was different the chassis’ were all very similar. The tubular frame was simplistic and held a monster motor, the 455ci Pontiac was the favorite of the “Judge” Drivers. These cars put out tons of horsepower sending the Funny Car to a blazing 250 MPH, 7 second Quarter Mile! All the cars ran a Fiberglass body designed after a Stock style street car. The muscle cars of the day were some of the most popular styles with many of the drivers. Arnie “The Farmer” Beswick was one of the more notable drivers that had a ’69 GTO, his was “the Super Judge”.

For the Modeler: This review covers the Model King Re-Release (Re-Pop) of the AMT ’69 GTO Funny Car. This is Kit # 21891P in their catalog and is a Limited Edition run of the kit. This kit can still be found for sale in hobby shops and online. This kit has seen 1 multiple Box Arts over the years and has been around well over 40 years. It seems the molds have been cleaned up and repaired as there is little Flash on this kit compared to previous versions, and the moldings are very crisp too. This is a Skill Level 2 for the Moderate Builder although no ratings are given on the box. The build consists of 92 parts molded in White, Chrome, Clear and Clear Red and has Vinyl tires. There are two sheets of decals, one being all new and a BONUS reproduction of the Vintage AMT “Here Comes the Judge” 57 T-Bird (Kit#T-235-7) decals. You get a nicely detailed motor with the ability to add extra details. The tubular frame needs construction as it is multiple parts. The body is a single cast with minor mold lines and is STOCK if you want to use it for other builds. The tires are a matching set of front Skinnies and mismatched rear Slicks, one each Goodyear and Racemaster. Overall dimensions are: Length: 8”, Width: 3”, Height: 2-1/14”.

Covered in this Review: If you want to perfect your build; basic construction; preparing parts for better finishing; alternate assembly sequence suggestions for fit and ease of finishing; complete paint and adhesive selections and applications; test fitting; working with full sheet decals; complete gauge cluster detailing; chassis detailing; adding and detailing the wheelie bars; making  realistic wheels; constructing the wheels and axles; dashboard detailing suggestions; front and rear suspension build sequence; chassis installation; correcting the steering column, interior construction; building and detailing the blown 455 cid engine; removing unwanted copyright script; using “clear” glue for the windows and glass; using floor polish to make crystal clear windows; version considerations; rear tire brand cautionary note; correcting the motor mount; fuel pump issue; where NOT to use glue; using optional gauge props; comparative kit history; installing the kit’s spare parts; using Alclad Candy Paint for a spectacular finish; Making the trim stand out with foil; identifying and removing mold lines; decal preparation and application; using a scratch built distributor; using black wash to detail the grill; are all fully examined in this extensive 17 page, full-color Step-by-Step review in PDF format.
