The Swindler II was the first Willys from the Stone, Woods & Cook stables. It was initially built to run in the A/Gas class with a bored, stroked, and blown 448ci Olds V-8. It was a show-quality car with blue-and-white tuck-and-roll ’58 Thunderbird seats with matching door panels and headliner and a chromed roll bar. The first Swindler II was destroyed in a towing accident returning from the ’61 Nationals at Indy and replaced with another virtually identical Willys body. With its familiar light-blue paint, this is the version that gained S-W-C’s initial fame. After an NHRA weight-break change in the A/Gas class, the team built a second, lighter Willys in 1964 with a fiberglass front end to take advantage of the new rules. They continued to run the Swindler II in B/Gas, at which time the cars were renamed Swindler A and Swindler B. At first, Swindler A was painted black; both cars were later re-sprayed in a darker candy blue. After a narrow victory against Big John Mazmanian at the ’64 Winternationals, both cars’ blown Olds engines were switched to blown Hemi motors. Today, Stone, Woods & Cook’s legendary Swindler A resides on loan from Mike Cook in the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum, just a few hundred yards from the famous Pomona drag strip where it earned so much glory in the heyday of the Gasser Wars.

For the Modeler: This review covers the Re-Release (Re-Pop) of the Stone, Woods & Cook 41 Willys. This is one of Revell’s SSP kits (Selected Subjects Program) and is a Limited Production, One-time offering molded in 1/25 scale. The kit has been released 1 multiple times in a variety of box arts and different drag race teams. This is a direct recast of original moldings and does show some Flash on the parts. The chassis is marked 1982. You get 155 parts molded in White, Chrome, Clear Acetate and Vinyl Tires. The build is a Skill Level 3 for advanced modelers. You get a highly detailed Oldsmobile motor with plenty of Chrome. The chassis is as well detailed and includes poseable front wheels. The interior is nice and does include decals for the Blue insert color. The doors trunk and hood are able to be opened and the body can be assembled enough to allow painting as a whole. This eases color variances with a Metallic color. All the important trim work is included as add-on parts; not molded to the body. The decals are replications of the originals and give you the Swindler II or A and B options, but the majority of the decals are in the Blue for the Light Blue body Swindler II version. Overall size is: Length: 6-7/8″. Width: 3″, Height: 2-11/16″

The USS Akron and USS Macon were developed prior to WWII with the help of engineers from Germany’s Graf Zeppelin Company. It was a military experiment for rigid frame lighter than air (LTA) aircraft carriers built for the US Navy by Goodyear. It included many refinements from the original dirigible designs such as the use of helium. These airships were designed to carry five single-seat Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawks as advance scouts or Fleet N2Y-1 trainers. They even carried a gondola that could be lowered below the clouds for reconnaissance. Unfortunately, these airships crashed due to storm damage at sea soon after they went into service ending the public and military love affair with LTA transportation.

For the Modeler: This review covers the USS Akron or Macon LTA Aircraft Carrier 1:520 Scale AMT Model Kit #892. A 2015 re-release, this model should be readily available at most outlets. The kit has markings for either the USS Akron (ZRS-4) or the USS Macon 000a (ZRS-5). AMT designates this as a Skill Level 2 kit for modelers 10 years and older but I think that might be a little light due to some of the small parts and decals in this kit. For a kit with only seven main pieces it will give you a workout with the tweezers. It is molded in light gray styrene and has waterslide decals with a basic construction guide.   Large but simple, this kit is a great example of the excellent subject matter that used to be commonplace in the modeling industry. With some scratch building you could open up the hatch door and make it into a diorama with biplanes or a spy basket!

Auto Transport Trailer 1:25 Scale Revell Model Kit #85-1509 Review

An auto transport trailer is a type of semi-trailer designed to efficiently transport passenger vehicles via truck. Commercial-size car arrying trailers are commonly used to ship new cars from the manufacturer to auto dealerships. Open car carrier trailers typically have a double-decker design, with both decks subdivided into a number of loading and storage ramps that can be tilted and lifted independently of one another with hydraulics. Unlike flatbed tow trucks, which often need to transport non-running vehicles, car carrier trailers aren’t equipped with loaders or winches, instead relying on the vehicles to be loaded under their own power. The trailer hydraulics allow the ramps to be aligned on a slope so cars can be driven up and secured to the ramp floor with chains, tie-down ratchets or wheel straps, after which the ramp can be tilted in any direction to optimize stacking. To load vehicles on the top deck of a double-decker commercial trailer, the rear half of the deck can tilt and be lowered hydraulically, forming a drive-up ramp to the upper deck. The top deck is usually loaded first and off-loaded last, since the presence of cars on the lower deck can make it impossible to lower the top deck ramp. Trailer hydraulics are operated using a control box mounted on the trailer itself.

For the Modeler: This review covers Revell Kit #1509 Auto Transport Trailer in 1/25 Scale. This is a direct Re-release (Re-Pop) of the car transporter and has been seen in many different box arts over the years. The build is a Skill Level 3 for advanced builders. 1 The kit consists of 160 parts molded in Gray with Vinyl tires and tubing and scale sized metal chain. The instructions are well laid out and have a cutting diagram for the tubing. Decals are given for the hazard stripes, a generic shipping company and a few “New Car” window decals. Much of the assembly is painted one color for the frame and ramps and a second color for the chassis. Most transport companies would have matching tractors painted the same colors as their trailers. Completed dimensions are: Length: 23-5/8″, Width: 6-7/8″, Height: 5-1/8″.

Covered in this Review: If you want to perfect your build; basic construction; preparing parts for better finishing; removing the copyright script; removing flash and sprue tabs; frame assembly; ramp and fender assembly; critical note regarding the fender braces; realistic detailing for the trailer lights; upper ramp assembly sequence; alternate assembly sequence suggestions for fit and ease of finishing; functional considerations; tire alignment; complete paint and adhesive selections and applications; test fitting; detailing the landing gear; making realistic tires; tie-down chain assembly and detailing; chassis detailing and installation; scratch building mounting pins for the hydraulic hoses; hydraulic hose differentiation; where NOT to use glue for functional parts; how to detail paint the accessory tools; decal handling, preparation and application; using “setting” solutions to enhance the decals; are all fully examined in this 18 page, full-color Step-by-Step review in PDF format.
