By the late 90’s a new kind of “Hot Rod” was seen on the streets and in the hearts of young Americans as well. These new hot rods or “Tuners” as they called were mainly four cylinder imports with added horsepower, bright paint and cool graphics. One of the favorites among the tuner enthusiasts was the Honda Civic. Both Coupe and hatchback models were popular because they were readily available, reasonably priced and had lots of aftermarket engine/body parts available for them.

Revell calls this “The super-sport import” and describes it like this on their website, “ Staying one step of the law isn’t easy but in the high octane world of Fast and Furious, cars like the nimble Honda Civic Si Coupe help keep you out in front. This limited production hi-performance coupe gets the standout crime crew around in style and at speed. Get your slice of the action with this cool kit!”

For the Modeler: This is a review of the Revell Fast & Furious Honda Civic Si in 1:25 scale. The kit has 106 parts molded in White, Chrome and Clear parts, with soft Vinyl tires, instructions and waterslide decals.  The kit is a great example of this 000b popular tuner car and even features the coveted VTEC engine. While the kit doesn’t specify a year I would put it around a 1998. This kit is a skill level 3 for the advanced modeler featuring several build options. There are no mold lines, injector pin marks or flash to found on this kit. The kit is a 2n1 that can be built either stock or as the full Tuner version.  The overall build size is: Length: 7”, Width: 3”, Height: 2-1/16”.

PROS: The two best things about this kit [besides the great fit] have to be the numerous build versions [3 sets of rims, 2 rear deck wings and 2 front/rear fascias] and the decal sheet which features full script decals for both stock and tuner versions, 2 sets of 000c instrument panel decals, two sets of tuner graphics, carbon fiber hood decal and much more.

Cons:  If I were forced to list anything bad about this kit it would be only two things. First the window glass was a bit too wide around the back windows, but an easy fix by sanding the sides a little with a sanding stick. Finally the Carbon fiber hood decal did not want to conform to the shape of the hood, but with some patience and a little Testors decal set it laid down nicely.

999
Overall:  This kit was a blast to build. I am not a big fan of Tuner cars, but I must say I would build this kit again. Because of the great fit, numerous build options and wonderful overall look of the finished build I would give this kit 9.5 out of 10 stars.

Royal Rail Show Rod 1:24 Scale AMT Model Kit #630 Review

First released in 1972, AMT’s zany Royal Rail show rod is back! It’s a wild ride for all the Kingdom’s Koolest Kats! Featuring an injected motor with “hear ye! Trumpet” intakes, hyper-wide “gumball” slicks, super long chrome forks, this deluxe dragger can beat all the village wagons! Royal Rail’s “crowning achievement” is it’s cozy “fit for a king” interior, sporting a psychedelic “pop-bottle glass” rear window, “aristo-Kat pillow seat” and slick shifter, all “topped off” by a crazy deluxe cruisin’ crown! This kit was one of three released in 1972 when the Show Rod/Chopper Trike craze was in full swing for modelers. The other two kits are Gypsy Wagon and Hemi Hauler. In 2009 Round2 brought the Royal Rail back as a Retro Deluxe version to include new parts, decals and a Mini Box display box.

For the Modeler: This is a review of the Royal Rail in 1/25 scale Re-released (Re-Popped) by Round2 under the AMT brand. It is still widely available through online model kit retailers.  This is a Retro Deluxe version with all the original parts plus new parts and an expanded decal sheet. The kit has over 90 parts molded in White, Chrome, Clear, Clear Blue and Clear Orange, Plastic and Vinyl tires and a Metal axle. Round2 lists this as a Skill Level 2 build for the intermediate modeler. The kit includes a nicely designed Hemi motor but does lack many detail parts on the motor. The interior is simply a pillow seat and wheel. The body is comprised of multiple parts and as a Show Rod; it is not a practical vehicle. There is a lot of chrome in this build and unfortunately you do get some mold lines on parts that would look better without them, to fix this would require stripping and re-chroming or painting. The overall build size is: Length: 9”, Width: 5-1/4”, Height: 6-1/2”.

Ferrari Modena 360 Spider 1:24 Scale Revell Model Kit #85-2365 Review

The Ferrari Modena Spider was produced between 1999 and 2005 of which only about 8,800 Modena’s and 7,565 Spider versions of the car were produced, making it a very collectable car.  The Ferrari Modena Spider was an all aluminum car with a 400hp V-8 engine. It is said that the Ferrari Modena Spider was the 20th model of a convertible version Ferrari ever designed at that time. The convertible top came four basic colors; black, blue, grey, and beige. The Ferrari Modena Spider did not sport the typical flip up headlights that were very common on the previous Ferraris. The Ferrari Modena Spider could get a top speed of 189 mph and could do 0-60 in 4.2 seconds

For the Modeler: Revell has released a few model kits of the Ferrari Modena Spider. I have found four versions released by Revell however I am sure there could be more. The four versions out there are; Revell 7388 Ferrari Modena (2001), Revell 7389 Ferrari Modena Spider 000b (2001 and molded in yellow), Revell 2365 Revell Ferrari Modena Spider (2002) and Revell 07085 Revell Ferrari Spider (2012 and a Skill Level 3). This is the Revell kit 2365 that is 1: 24 scale, and a Skill Level 2. Revell released this kit before in 2001 (the earliest I found during my research)  and now Revell brings it back in 2012.The pieces are molded in white, chrome, clear, black vinyl tires with water slide decals. There are 69 pieces to this kit and very well laid out instructions. The dimensions are; 7-1/4” L X 3-5/8” W X 1-7/8” H.
