Monogram’s Green Hornet kit is considered to be among the earliest all-plastic model kits mass-produced for public consumption. Originally issued in 1960 under the kit  number of PC-61, it was later re-issued in 1996 with the number 85-0061. The original box art (and kit number) remained the same, however there were a few discrepancies between the box art description and instruction sheet.

For the Modeler: This review takes a look at one of the early models that made the fledgling kit industry a success. Although it is an old design, it was well done, and the kit has been reissued a couple times (1996, 2003) since. This no-frills easy builder kit is perfect for the novice and sports a lot of chrome making for a great display piece.

WOW! What a trip down memory lane…The Green Hornet roadster was the first automobile model I ever built. It’s seems so odd to hear these rave reviews of the ease of assembly – I guess when your nine years old and it’s your first car model (and maybe your third model ever) it all seems tougher. Regardless, that model sat proudly on my bookshelf for many years. Now that I have more experience, I may have to go get another and dress it up with those missing engine parts, etc.

BTW, I always give my decals a couple of light coats of a clear spray, like Krylon. They take MUCH longer to soak off the backing paper, but it holds the oldest and most brittle decals together.

Thanks for the kind words George! It was a fun building experience for me, even after all these years. If you’re interested in purchasing one of these kits I can point you to ATM Hobby Shop, who offers them cheaper than most everybody around. Contact me at my e-mail addy and I’ll gladly help you out!

I looked for the white sidewall by searching Vinyl Nation on the internet but I cannot find where they sell them. Can you help?

    Frank,

Vinyl Nation is just setting thier business and I am working with them to set up an online outlet to provide the products.

Until then contact Vinyl Nation’s owner Darrell Gwinn at dirk_emphasis281@hotmail.com for pricing and ordering information.

Marty you said you had trouble with the decals falling apart, A way to prevent this is to put a light coat of clear coat over them for strength. I normally use duplicolor crystal clear it lays smooth and you can still use a setting solution on them and polish over to blend them in and this clear will never yellow with age. before you do this you can test the decal strength by using a part of the sheet that you wont use on the model. Give it a try on your next build Im sure you will like the results. Buy the way nice build Tony

    Hi Tony,
Thanks for the great info on the decals! I normally use Dupli-Color primers, paints, and clearcoats on my builds, so I’ll give that a shot.
Also, thanks for the kind words on the Green Hornet! I must tell you I enjoy reading your reviews and seeing your beautiful builds too!
    God bless,

    Marty O.
