Could there be a bigger rush than a driving a dragster? Imagine being seated at the rear of an almost twenty foot long machine with about a thousand horsepower that covers a quarter mile in 6.5 seconds at 225 miles per hour. I think that would be as close to being strapped to a rocket as you can get. As dragster’s go, The Young American was a great one. Driven by Carl Casper this nitro burning top fuel dragster won six races between November 1970 and February 1971 defeating Don Garlits’ legendary Swamp Rat three times! Having built a number of dragsters in my youth I was excited to get started on this iconic dragster.
For the Modeler: The (approximately 1:25 scale) kit features 77 pieces molded in white with chrome plated parts and black vinyl tires which is good for a dragster. However, that excitement was dampened a bit as I noticed the almost nonexistent part numbering and lack of proper directions provided by the instruction sheet. For those of us builders that have been spoiled by modern detailed instruction sheets these “old school†instructions provide a challenge, so I have done my review to offset this. During this review I will refer to parts by the number they are assigned [watch the color of the number as well as it indicates plated/non plated part] in a particular panel or step. For the most part none of the parts are numbered so I will clarify, reorder and explain some steps in the instructions as we go.
