During the Cold War, our major cities were surrounded by Nike guided missile bases to guard against enemy aircraft. They were a key element in our nation’s defense system.  These bases were accompanied by radar stations to detect the incoming aircraft.  Once the missile was fired, target radar guided the missile until it intercepted the enemy aircraft.  The Nike was composed of two parts, the booster and the guided missile.  The guided missile contained the warhead and the guidance devices which were in contact with ground radar.  The Nike was effective to a height of 60,000 ft with an effective range of 50 miles.  At a speed of 1500 miles per hour it could out-maneuver the enemy’s fastest aircraft.

For the Modeler: This review covers the Nike Anti Aircraft Missile with Launcher & Crew 1:32 Scale Revell (Renwal) Model Kit #85-7815 from the Selected Subjects Program (SSP) Series. The kit includes 80 parts molded in dark green and white styrene and waterslide decals. Revell rates this kit a skill level 2 for the intermediate builder. I believe this kit was initially released in the early 1960s. Renwal was always well known for producing what were considered quality kits that were a notch above the rest and looking at these parts, I have to say that they did an excellent job of molding the kit.  Finished dimensions are: Length: 10″ (254mm), Width: 9″ (228.6mm), Height: 11″ (279.4mm).  Remember: keep learning and have fun!
