CheZooom Corvair Funny Car 1:25 Scale AMT Model Kit #873 Review
Review and Photos by Alan Mann
The Kats at AMT have retooled the missing parts necessary to resurrect the CheZooom Corvair funny car! Featuring a custom rear-engine chassis design and blown drag motor, this sought-after kit has not been available since the late 1960s. With full Retro Deluxe treatment including optional tinted windows, it’s been made even better than the original! While not a real race car this “Phantom†design is based on the chassis of the Hemi Under Glass kit with the Corvair body. This was an exclusive AMT creation to capitalize on the Dragstrip model interest from the late 60’s.
For the Modeler: This review is based on the Round2/AMT kit #AMT873 CheZooom Corvair. The kit is 1/25 scale and is considered a Skill Level 3 for the advanced builder. The kit consists of roughly 90 parts molded in White, Clear, Clear Red, Chrome and Vinyl tires. The instruction sheet is broken into five steps that assemble the car in sub-assembly format. The decals are crisp reprints of the originals. The motor assembles nicely and detail is fair. It would be easy to add extra details on this motor. The interior is a simple tub with no details. There is one seat and a basic dash. The chassis is a basic Drag car design and is actually Copyright stamped Plymouth Barracuda with a date of 2004. The kit has M&H Slicks that are 2 piece plastic but also included is a very nice set of Vinyl Goodyear slicks with Tampo-Print. The body is a basic Corvair and looks correct. The kit has optional parts that can be added at your discretion. The instructions have you trim the rear wheel openings to fit the slicks, but you’ll have to follow my guidelines for a proper trim. I recommend building the chassis as a whole then test fitting and cutting as needed prior to painting the body. Overall dimensions are: Length: 7-1/4â€, Width: 2-3/4â€, Height: 2-1/4â€.
