The GTO was built by the Pontiac division of GM from 1964 to 1974. Although there were earlier muscle cars the GTO is considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models. In 1969 a new model called the “Judge” was introduced. The name came from a comedy routine, “Here Come de Judge”, used repeatedly on the Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In TV show. The Judge routine was made popular by legendary showman Sammy Davis, Jr. In the late 60s and early 70s some of the most exciting cars you could see at the drag strip were the Nitro-Methane powered Funny Cars. While the outer body was different the chassis’ were all very similar. The tubular frame was simplistic and held a monster motor, the 455ci Pontiac was the favorite of the “Judge” Drivers. These cars put out tons of horsepower sending the Funny Car to a blazing 250 MPH, 7 second Quarter Mile! All the cars ran a Fiberglass body designed after a Stock style street car. The muscle cars of the day were some of the most popular styles with many of the drivers. Arnie “The Farmer” Beswick was one of the more notable drivers that had a ’69 GTO, his was “the Super Judge”.

For the Modeler: This review covers the Model King Re-Release (Re-Pop) of the AMT ’69 GTO Funny Car. This is Kit # 21891P in their catalog and is a Limited Edition run of the kit. This kit can still be found for sale in hobby shops and online. This kit has seen 1 multiple Box Arts over the years and has been around well over 40 years. It seems the molds have been cleaned up and repaired as there is little Flash on this kit compared to previous versions, and the moldings are very crisp too. This is a Skill Level 2 for the Moderate Builder although no ratings are given on the box. The build consists of 92 parts molded in White, Chrome, Clear and Clear Red and has Vinyl tires. There are two sheets of decals, one being all new and a BONUS reproduction of the Vintage AMT “Here Comes the Judge” 57 T-Bird (Kit#T-235-7) decals. You get a nicely detailed motor with the ability to add extra details. The tubular frame needs construction as it is multiple parts. The body is a single cast with minor mold lines and is STOCK if you want to use it for other builds. The tires are a matching set of front Skinnies and mismatched rear Slicks, one each Goodyear and Racemaster. Overall dimensions are: Length: 8”, Width: 3”, Height: 2-1/14”.
