1970 Chevelle SS DONK 1:24 Scale Revell Model Kit #85-2058 Review
Review and Photos by Alan Mann
The Chevelle is a mid-sized Muscle Car produced by Chevrolet in three generations for the 1964 through 1977 model years. Part of the General Motors A-Body platform, the Chevelle was one of Chevrolet’s most successful nameplates. Body styles include coupes, sedans, convertibles and station wagons. After a three-year absence, the El Camino was reintroduced as part of the new Chevelle lineup. The 1970 Chevelle shared many sheet metal body parts with the 1970 Buick Skylark GSX, both are GM automobiles and have interchangeable sheet metal. They’re also the only 2 high performance muscle cars to share the same roofline. The 1970 Chevelle came in sport coupe, sport sedan, convertible, four-door sedan, a couple of wagons, and coupé utility (the El Camino) body styles.
Donks are a type of highly customized automobile, typically a traditional, full-size, body on frame, V8 powered, rear wheel drive American-built sedan modified by significantly increasing the ground clearance and adding large-diameter wheels with low-profile tires. Vehicles customized in the Donk style are distinguished by their oversized (even disproportionate) wheels, ranging from 20 inches to 30 inches or more in diameter (largest being 50 inch), as well as fanciful custom paint-jobs and expensive audio equipment. Suspension modifications similar to those employed on lifted pickup trucks are made to give adequate clearance for the large wheels. They were given this name because the “Impala” symbol was referred to as a “donkey” by owners or “donk” for short.
For the Modeler: This review covers the Revell Release of the Donk version of the3 ‘n 1 ’70 Chevelle Kit # 85-2058 in the catalog and is a Re-release (Re-Pop) with new parts. This is considered a Conversion kit. The model has seen multiple releases and there are parts are in this kit to replicate the Stock, Supercharged “Heavy Chevyâ€, and Donk versions. But the decals only have the custom Donk version. This is a Skill Level 2 kit for moderate ability builders. The kit has about 130 parts molded in White, Clear, Chrome and includes Vinyl tires and metal pins. The build is straight forward and fairly easy with few problems. It has a nicely detailed motor with an optional supercharger. The motor can be wired and made into a contest quality look quite easily. The chassis is fairly detailed and includes a complete Chrome Donk suspension as well as a stock suspension. The interior is a tub and while the detail is good, painting it is an issue as the door panels are attached. The body is straight and smooth with few blemishes. As it is a one-piece body with just the hood separate; painting is easy. The tires are the typical no name generic style. The instructions are the usual book style you see from Revell. The decals are Donk version only but include seat and dash decals. As a DONK build version the overall dimensions are: Length: 8-3/8″, Width: 3-1/4″, Height: 3â€.
