In WWII the Fleet Oiler was crucial to the success of the allied war effort.  Getting fuel to the troops overseas was a critical factor in the allied victory.  Germany knew this and they sent their wolf packs out to try and stop them.  Casualties among the Merchant Marine forces that manned the tankers were the highest of any branch in the service by percentage.  These were slow sitting ducks with a crucial payload and even though they were heavily armed, as merchant ships, go the US was losing over 30 ships a week in 1942 before the tide of war began to turn in the allies favor.

For the Modeler: This review covers the re-release of the US Navy Tanker Kennebec Class Fleet Oiler Lindberg 1:525 Scale Model Kit #HL438. This kit has been released a number times and this 2016 release features box art from the original 1959 issue.  This same version is available in the current Round2 catalog. It is suitable for moderate skill level 2 modelers age 10 and over. In the box, you will get about 37 parts molded in medium gray and a reel of thread-type rigging material. It features a one-piece hull and deck and has Cartograph Decals for five different ships. It is a “Made in USA” kit to boot. The instructions are simply a one page exploded diagram with color callouts on the backside for two versions.  The finished dimensions are: Length: 12”, Width: 1.65”, Height: 3½”.
